Safety Tips for the Elders Who Drive

You may be an elder who is still capable and who still enjoys hitting the road. Your loved-ones may worry about your condition and safety.  Though you have been a good driver all your life, it changes as you aged.  It could be true that your physical and mental abilities decline, but you can still stay safe on the road by considering the tips below.

Be aware of your health condition. It is necessary to regularly see your doctor. Observe if there is any change in your ability to see, to hear, to focus and to remember. Keep regular exercises  and a healthy diet.  Listen to your doctor's recommendations.

Avoid potential hazards.  You should maintain a safe driving distance when following another car.  This is advisable so you will have the time to save yourself from potential danger.

Stay focused.  Your attention should only be focused on the road.  Avoid distractions like eating, using your cell phone or watching a video.  Sometimes, it is your companion who cause the distraction.  It could be the kids who are fighting or a baby that cries.

Know when to drive.  You cannot just drive at any time.  As much as possible, refrain from driving at night, when there is an unfavorable weather condition or even during rush hours of the day.

Observe traffic signs. Make sure to  strictly follow traffic rules and road signs.  Avoid rushing and over taking if not necessary.  If you see the go signal, allow the car in front of you to move a little distant from you before following.

Be extra careful.  Remember that there may be people crossing on the road and intersections.  There may also be bike or motorcycle riders which are not noticeable, so you should be extra vigilant to make sure that you are not going to hit anyone.

Stop when drowsy.  It is not safe to proceed in driving if you are drowsy. No matter what, you should stop.  It can be a side effect of a certain medicine.  Ask your doctor if your medicine causes drowsiness.
